Efraín Andrade Viteri

Paintings & Drawings

Marimba Theme

The “Marimba Paintings” are Efraín Andrade’s signature theme. While over the years he did many portraits, landscapes and still-lives, it is the Marimbas that he is most known for and best represent the culture of the people of Esmeraldas.

Pen and ink

‘Pen and ink’ is the fine art technique that involves the use of ink applied with a dip pen.
In June of 1958 Demetrio Aguilera Malta expressed of Efraín Andrade’s artwork: “The first thing that amazes us in Efraín Andrade is his drawing technique. Both in his pure black and white productions and in those that have greater chromatic richness, we can see a great artistic category. It seems that Andrade “paints” with the pen.”

Cubism

In the early fifties, Andrade experimented with the contemporary movement of cubism, but soon went back to the straightforward realist style that would characterize his work from then on.

Landscape

Nature was always the frame of Efraín Andrade’s paintings. His encounter with the natural environment manifested on his arrival in 1950 to Esmeraldas, the green province he adopted as his own.

People

The people of Esmeraldas were the main subject of Andrade’s paintings. To him, they represent the core essence of the beautiful green province.
Andrade was proud of the artwork that expressed the life and feelings of people he observed, though he did not promote his art. He wanted his paintings to speak for him.
